Early Life and Education

On April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russia, Maria Sharapova was born o. She was born to Yuri and Yelena, and they were from Gomel, Belarus. Sharapova has an older brother named Dmitri.

At the age of four, Sharapova began playing tennis. She was coached by her father from age six until she turned pro at age 14. In 2001, at the age of 14, Sharapova moved to Bradenton, Florida, to train at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy.

Sharapova attended the IMG Academy in Bradenton from 2001 to 2004. In 2002, she won the Orange Bowl tournament in the 18-and-under division. In 2004, she graduated from IMG Academy.

Sharapova turned professional in 2004 and made her WTA debut that year at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California.

 

Start of career

Maria Sharapova began her tennis career at the age of four. Her father, Yuri, was a former professional footballer who had moved the family to Siberia to work as a coal miner.

When Maria was two years old, her parents divorced and she moved with her mother, Yelena, to Sochi on the Black Sea. It was there that Sharapova began taking tennis lessons.

Sharapova’s first big break came when she was nine years old and won a regional junior tournament in Moscow. This led to a meeting with Martina Navratilova, who agreed to coach Sharapova for free.

From there, Sharapova’s career took off. She relocated to Nick Bollettieri’s famed tennis academy in Bradenton, Florida, and turned pro at the age of 14.

Sharapova made an immediate impact on the professional circuit, winning her first WTA title at the 2004 Disneyland Resort Open.

She reached the semifinals of Wimbledon that same year, becoming the youngest woman ever to do so. The following year, Sharapova won her first Grand Slam singles title at the 2005 Australian Open.

She would go on to win two more Grand Slam titles (the 2006 US Open and 2008 Australian Open) before suffering a series of injuries that derailed her career for several years.

 

Peak of career

Sharapova’s peak years were from 2005-2010 when she won 3 grand slam titles and was ranked number one in the world for 21 weeks.

She was the first Russian woman to win Wimbledon and the first Russian to win the Australian Open. In 2008, she reached the final of the French Open, but lost to Ana Ivanovic. She then went on to win Wimbledon again in 2010, beating Serena Williams in the final.

Maria Sharapova has had a long and successful career, winning many prestigious titles.

Sharapova has won numerous awards and records throughout her career. In 2005, she was named WTA Newcomer of the Year and Sports Illustrated’s Sportswoman of the Year.

In 2006, she became the first Russian woman to be ranked number one in the world. She also holds the record for most consecutive weeks ranked in the top 10 (143), most singles titles won by a Russian woman (36), and most Grand Slam singles finals reached by a Russian woman (10).
