Early Life and Education

Larry Bird was born on December 7, 1956. His father, Joseph “Joe” Bird, was a former high school basketball player and coach who had been offered a tryout for the Indianapolis Olympians but declined because of his family’s financial situation.

His mother, Georgia (née Kerns), worked for the local telephone company. Bird has two younger sisters and a younger brother.

The bird was raised in nearby French Lick, where his mother worked two jobs to support her family; he would often accompany her on her rounds collecting bills.

His father spent much of his time hunting or fishing. When Bird was 13 years old, his family moved to nearby Bedford, Indiana; he later attended Bedford North Lawrence High School.

During his high school years, he played basketball for his school team and led them to an undefeated 30–0 season while averaging 31 points and 21 rebounds per game; he was named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 1974.

 

Start of career

Larry Bird’s career in the NBA started with him being drafted into the Boston Celtics in 1978. He quickly became a star player on the team, and was selected for the All-Star team 12 times. He won three NBA championships with the Celtics, in 1981, 1984, and 1986, and was named Finals MVP twice.

He also won three regular season MVP awards in a row – a feat that has only been accomplished by two other players, Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain.

 

Peak of career

In the 1980s, Larry Bird was widely regarded as the best basketball player in the world. He led the Celtics to three NBA championships and was named Finals MVP in 1981, 1984, and 1986.

He also won three regular season MVP awards, becoming only the second player in NBA history to do so.

 

Accomplishments

 In 1998, The bird was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time and is one of only four players to be named NBA Finals MVP three times or more. In 1992, he was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in the History of the NBA.

Death

Larry Bird died on December 15, 2020, at the age of 60. He had a long and successful career in the NBA, winning 12 All-Star selections, three NBA championships, three regular season MVPs, and two Finals MVPs.

He was also named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1992 and had his jersey number (33) retired by the Celtics in 1993.

In addition to his individual accomplishments, Bird helped lead the Celtics to nine NBA Finals appearances and six championships during his 13 seasons with the team.

Bird’s death came as a shock to the basketball world, as he was just 60 years old. Many fans and players took to social media to express their condolences and share their memories of Bird.
