James Watt Inventions
James Watt was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer who improved on Thomas Newcomen’s earlier design for the steam engine.

He attended school at age 11 and entered the University of Glasgow when he was 14 years old. After graduating from Glasgow University in 1754 with master’s degrees in physics and mathematics, Watt became an instrument maker at Glasgow University’s science museum.

Watt had been working in Glasgow as an instrument maker for about 15 years when he built his first micrometer in 1764. It was based on a design by Jesse Ramsden who had described it two years earlier in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.
The instrument allowed Watt to measure very small distances accurately using a screw mechanism. He used this device to make more accurate gauges than any other instrument maker in Britain at the time. It also became popular among watchmakers who used it to measure their tools and components with great precision

In 1803 Watt became involved with William Murdoch who had invented some improvements to Newcomen’s steam engine. Together they worked out details of what is now known as the “Cornish” engine (or “Murdoch and Watt” engine).
Watt’s most influential innovation was to attach a separate condenser for cooling the steam after it had done its job at a given point in the process, so that the same steam could be reused indefinitely.
This was key to enabling the widespread adoption of high-pressure engines. In keeping with his improving efficiency by using less fuel, he invented a rotative beam engine that used less coal than any other type of beam engine.
