Antonie van was born in Delft, Dutch Republic, on 24 October 1632. He was the last child of Philips Thoniszoon, a basket maker who died when Antonie was only five years old, and Margaretha Bel van den Berch, who remarried Jacob Jansz Molijn, a painter.

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was born in Delft, Dutch Republic on 24 October 1632. His father, Philips Antoniesz van Leeuwenhoek, was a basket maker who died when Antonie was only five years old, and his mother, Margaretha (Bel van den Berch), remarried to a painter, Pieter Jacobszoon. His stepfather died a few years later.

He attended school in Warmond in 1644 and started as a shopkeeper’s apprentice in Amsterdam the same year. The shop owner was Elias Whilevelt, who imported cloth and other dry goods from England, and sold them at the Lauwerecht market in Delft. Leeuwenhoek worked as an assistant to Whilevelt until he became 21 years old.

Antonie mother, Margaretha Bel van den Berch, was a widow at age 30 with no occupation and three children. She remarried when Henske Pieters Coenraedt (Jan Nieuwstraten), 45, the new father of Antonie and his older sister Maria, died after ten years of marriage when the boy was eight.

This last union was arranged by a longtime family friend and tradesman who has sealed all marriages in the city for the previous thirty years.

He assisted at services in the Oude Kerk. His son-in-law Harman Woutersz (whose wife Cornelia ran her deceased husbands tavern) provided for Van Leeuwenhoek’s education as he showed an aptitude for numbers and Science. He was also highly skilled at painting, from which he would teach himself micrography.

This paper aims to add to van Leeuwenhoek’s biography by summarizing his work in the development of his microscope, his activities in Delft and in the city council, his social network, and his findings.
