Alexander the Great was a legendary Macedonian conqueror and one of the most successful military commanders in history. Along with Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte he is one of the heroic warriors to achieve legendary status among his countrymen.

Alexander the Great accomplishments are numerous, as his first reign as King of Macedonia lasted from 336 BC to 323 BC when he was 22 years old. He conquered many nations during this time and extended the boundaries of his empire all the way to India and Egypt.

Alexander the Great was born in 356 BC in Pella, ancient Macedonia. His parents were Philip II, leader of Macedonia and Olympias, princess of Epirus. They were a devoted couple who showed great trust towards each other.

Olympias belonged to the  dynasty of Molossians in Epirus and was the daughter of Neoptolemus I, the king of Epirus from 370 to 368 BC. Her mother’s name was Cleopatra which was a sister of Olympias’ father.

Alexander the Great, or Alexander III of Macedon, was born on July 20, 356 BC. He was tutored by Aristotle the famous philosopher himself from a young age and quickly became a magnificent general in his mid-20s.

In fact he was one of the most magnificent generals to have ever lived and after only 10 years of leading armies he had conquered the entire civilized world! He would continue pushing east until in India where he died. After his death generals of his conquered all the way to Egypt, spreading Greek culture and language as well as their advanced military tactics.

He died in 323 BC in Babylon at age 32. Plutarch said: “He died of excessive drinking”. However, that is not the whole truth about Alexander the Great death.

Alexander, King of the Macedonians and conqueror of much of the known world at the time – including huge empires like the Persian Empire ​– died in 323 BC after a prolonged period of illness that may have been linked to malaria or typhoid.

History records how he was suffering from a fever that had attacked him for days before his death, which occurred in the palace at Babylon (in modern day Iraq). Some accounts claim he died peacefully in his sleep, others that he kept going until shortly before his death when he began to decline quickly and lost consciousness. Alexander the Great was 32 years old when he died.

When Alexander the Great died, he was buried in an unmarked grave that was lost to time. Now, a 2,300 year-old undisturbed tomb has been discovered in Greece — and some believe it might be that of Alexander the Great.
